FORMER PALACE OF THE GOVERNORS GENERAL

THIS SITE WAS FORMERLY OCCUPIED BY THE STATELY RESIDENCE OF CAPTAIN MANUEL ESTACIO VENEGAS, SECRETARY TO GOVERNOR GENERAL DIEGO FAJARDO. VENEGAS DIED ON MARCH 7, 1660, A PRISONER AT FORT SANTIAGO. HIS RESIDENCE WAS CONFISCATED AND BECAME THE PALACE OF THE GOVERNORS OF THE PHILIPPINE ISLANDS UNTIL ITS DESTRUCTION BY THE EARTHQUAKE OF JUNE 3, 1863. THESE FOUNDATIONS, INTENDED FOR THE NEW GUBERNATORIAL PALACE, WERE ABANDONED WHEN IT WAS DECIDED TO MAKE MALACAÑAN THE PERMANENT RESIDENCE OF THE GOVERNORS GENERAL.

National Registry of Historic Sites and Structures

The National Registry of Historic Sites and Structures is the NHCP’s official record historic sites and structures throughout the Philippines. Under Republic Act No. 10086, the Registry covers historic sites and structures documented by the NHCP, while Section 20 mandates the Historic Sites and Structures Documentation Center (HSSDC) to undertake their survey, identification, and documentation, and to maintain the National Registry.

The Registry serves as a public reference for information on places recognized for their significance to Philippine history and heritage.
