THE FIRST STONE CHURCH AND CONVENT WERE BUILT ABOUT 1621, BUT BOTH WERE SERIOUSLY DAMAGED DURING THE CHINESE UPRISING OF 1939. THE PRESENT CHURCH WAS PARTIALLY, AND THE CONVENT TOTALLY, DESTROYED BY THE EARTHQUAKES OF 1824; BOTH WERE REBUILT BEFORE 1851.
