Considered a heroine of the Philippine Revolution, Gliceria Marella de Villavicencio is famously called Aling Eriang. In a letter dated September 13, 1955, Claro M. Recto, a preeminent statesman; Maria Paz Mendoza-Guazon, the Philippines\u2019 first female medical graduate; and Pastor Endencia, a former Associate Justice, urged the Philippine Historical Committee to honor her with a bronze marker. Recto framed the request as a vital effort to restore patriotism during a “crisis of nationalism.” Written in Spanish, the letter bears their original signatures.<\/p>\n

This letter from Senator Recto was first considered by members of the Philippine Historical Committee on September 23, 1955. During this meeting, the committee members moved to consider a historical marker for Marella, subject to revision and comment. They discussed two primary points for the proposed marker: the war vessel Bulusan<\/em> and the Batalyon Maluya<\/em>. Some members also suggested interviewing General Aguinaldo and Batangas Governor Vicente Noble to gather more information.<\/p>\n

During the subsequent meeting of the PHC on September 29, 1955, the discussion centered on the veracity of the information contained in the book submitted by Marella\u2019s daughter. While some members argued that the details required independent verification, others maintained that the book was already well-documented. In the end, the majority of the members approved the installation of a marker for Marella.<\/p>\n

During the same period, the Chairman of the Philippine Historical Committee and a committee member interviewed General Aguinaldo to clarify details regarding Aling Eriang. In the interview, Aguinaldo confirmed that he knew Do\u00f1a Gliceria Marella de Villavicencio, stating that she provided material support to the Philippine Revolution. When asked about the war vessel Bulusan<\/em>, General Aguinaldo answered, \u201cYes, I remember the Bulusan <\/em>to have transported war goods, and as far as ownership is concerned, I know the Marella family owned the controlling stock of that boat.\u201d When asked if he remembered Aling Eriang being appointed “Madrina General” of the Filipino Forces during the inauguration of the First Philippine Republic, General Aguinaldo replied, \u201cI do not quite recall, for as I have said at the beginning, I was busy with bigger things at the time. It could be possible that Marella was authorized or appointed by the other generals.\u201d<\/p>\n

At a subsequent meeting on October 28, 1955, the committee voted to create a three-member subcommittee to draft the wording for the Marella marker, with the majority in favor of the motion. On November 18, 1955, members of the committee, specifically the subcommittee created on October 28, 1955 for the purpose of discussing the style of the inscription on the marker of Gilceria Marella de Villavicencio approved the following wording:<\/p>\n

Following careful deliberation, the committee approved the final draft wording for the Marella marker on November 28, 1955. Nearly a year later, on September 19, 1956, the PHC discussed a letter from Batangas Governor Feliciano Leviste inquiring about the proposed Marella marker. The PHC Chairman informed Gov. Leviste that the letter had been endorsed to the Secretary of Education and a reply was sent to him.<\/p>\n

Thirty years after Recto\u2019s letter, the National Historical Institute\u2014successor to the Philippine Historical Committee (which originally began as the Philippine Historical Research and Markers Committee) and the National Heroes Commission (Formerly the Jose Rizal National Centennial Commission) \u2014finally honored Gliceria Marella de Villavicencio on December 8, 1985, with a historical marker bearing the following inscription:<\/p>\n

The Philippine Historical Committee underwent multiple reorganizations causing significant administrative delays. When the Philippine Congress passed Republic Act No. 4368 it abolished both the PHC and the National Heroes Commission, combining their distinct workloads, archives, historical files, and ancestral shrines into a singular permanent agency called the National Historical Commission (NHC). The Philippine Historical Committee<\/a> (to which Recto wrote) was co-existing with the Jose Rizal National Centennial Commission, often splitting resources and focus. Furthermore, a backlog of approved historical markers remained uninstalled due to budgetary constraints. In 1972, following the declaration of Martial Law, the agency was reorganized into the National Historical Institute (NHI). Projects that were not “top priority” often got buried during these massive administrative shifts.<\/p>\n
