This half-body bust is part of a group of three Julie Lluch created in 2013 for the NHCP – Museo ng Katipunan-Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine. Here, de Jesus hides a document from being detected by Spanish authorities–a role she fulfilled to protect the revolutionary movement led by her husband, Andres Bonifacio.
“Oriang”, as she is known to those close to her, stood up against the Spanish regime by assisting the Katipunan through the handling of confidential documents for safekeeping. Oftentimes, according to her autobiography, driving in the dead of night in a closed-window vehicle, along the streets of Binondo, to move documents around. These courageous acts, paired with her dedication to the cause of the revolution, earned her a place in the pantheon of our nation’s heroes.
