Sandugo (Wilfredo Cañete, Jr., 2020)

Done in oil on canvas, it was an entry to the Unity category of the Quincentennial Art Competition, for which it won the minor prize. It depicts the casi casi or blood compact between Colambu, the rajah of Limasawa, and Ferdinand Magellan, the leader of the Spanish armada, on 28 March 1521. In this ritual, the two parties cut a wound either on their arm or breast, extract droplets of blood, mix them with wine, and then drink. As the two now share the same blood, they can be considered as friends and brothers. It can be considered as the earliest known act of diplomacy between a Filipino community and a Western people.

It is currently loaned to the Museo del Galeon, Pasay City.
